Thailand Entry Requirements 2026: The Complete Guide for Divers Visiting Koh Samui

Planning your next scuba diving holiday in Koh Samui? While the legendary diving at Sail Rock never changes, Thailand entry requirements in 2026 do. To ensure your transition from airplane to dive boat is as smooth as a drift dive, we’ve created the ultimate Thailand visa and entry guide for divers.

This guide is updated for April 2026 and focuses specifically on Thailand entry rules for divers traveling to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao.

1. The TDAC: Your Mandatory Digital Arrival Card

No more paper forms in the air

As of May 2025, Thailand officially replaced the old paper arrival forms with the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC). Every traveler entering Thailand must now complete this form before arrival. This new system helps speed up immigration procedures and makes your arrival smoother — meaning you can get to your first dive in Koh Samui even faster.
  • Timing: Must be submitted within 72 hours before arrival
  • Cost: Completely FREE (Beware of scam sites asking for payment!)
  • The Result: You will receive a QR Code
  • Requirement: Mandatory for all travelers
Save the QR code on your phone or print it. You cannot clear immigration without it. Submit your TDAC only via the official Thai Immigration portal: Thailand Digital Arrival Card – Official Website You can also verify updates directly on the Thai Immigration Bureau website: Thai Immigration Bureau

2. Tourist Entry: 60 Days of Freedom

For the 93 eligible countries (UK, EU, USA, AUS, etc.)

Currently, citizens from 93 nations can enter Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days. This makes Thailand one of the easiest destinations for scuba diving holidays in the world. This duration is perfect for:
  • Completing your PADI Open Water course
  • Continuing to Advanced Open Water
  • Joining multiple Sail Rock dive trips
  • Exploring Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao

⚠️ Important Note (April 2026):

There are ongoing discussions about reducing this exemption to 30 days. As of today, the 60-day rule still stands, but we strongly recommend double-checking your entry stamp at the immigration desk immediately upon arrival.

Extensions

If 60 days isn’t enough to satisfy your nitrogen cravings, you can extend your stay for an additional 30 days at the local Samui Immigration office:
  • Extension Duration: 30 days
  • Cost: 1,900 THB
  • Location: Koh Samui Immigration Office

3. The DTV: Work Remotely, Dive Daily

The ultimate choice for Digital Nomads

Launched in late 2024, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) has quickly become the favorite for long-term visitors and digital nomads in Koh Samui. If you work for a company outside of Thailand or are a freelancer, this visa allows you to live in Thailand while enjoying world-class diving.
  • Validity: 5 years (Multiple entries)
  • Duration: 180 days per entry
  • Extension: Additional 180 days
  • Financial Requirement: 500,000 THB savings
It’s one of the most cost-effective ways to make Koh Samui your “office” while spending your weekends diving at Sail Rock. Thailand eVisa Official Portal

4. Retirement & Marriage Visas

Living the dream in the Land of Smiles

If you are 50 or older, the Non-Immigrant O-A or O-X visas allow you to retire in Thailand. For those married to a Thai national, the Marriage Visa (Non-Immigrant O) offers a similar path to long-term residency. Both visas require 90-day reporting, which can now be done online: Thailand 90-Day Reporting System

5. THE 2026 ENTRY CHECKLIST

Before you head to the airport, make sure you have checked these five boxes:
  • Passport: At least 6 months validity remaining.
  • TDAC: QR code ready on your mobile.
  • Flight: Proof of a return or onward flight (Immigration checks this randomly).
  • Funds: At least 10,000 THB in cash or digital proof (20,000 THB for families).
  • Insurance: While not always mandatory for tourists, we highly recommend travel insurance that covers scuba diving!

Final Verdict: Keep It Simple

Navigating visas can seem complex, but for most divers, the process is now faster than ever thanks to digitalization. Just remember to submit your TDAC early, and you’ll be breathing through a regulator in no time. Do you have more questions about planning your trip to Koh Samui?
