History of Koh Samui

Historical evidence suggests Koh Samui was first inhabited around 1,200 years ago. Until the 1940s, the island remained isolated, accessible only by long boat journeys from the mainland. Infrastructure development began in the 1970s, when backpackers first discovered Samui’s natural beauty.

The completion of the island’s ring road in 1973 and tourism promotion by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in the 1980s helped transform Koh Samui into one of Thailand’s most popular destinations.

Despite rapid development, Koh Samui has managed to retain its tropical charm, with coconut palm–lined beaches, traditional fishing communities, and peaceful natural surroundings. The island offers a unique balance of vibrant nightlife, especially in Chaweng and Lamai, and tranquil escapes found in quieter areas around the island.
