Sail Rock, known as Thailand's most famous dive site, is a granite pinnacle in between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao that rises 15M out of the water.
It is a world class dive site and great for all levels of divers as there is much to see from the surface all the way to the bottom.
Sail rock is home to the famous “chimney” which is a vertical swim-through where you can enter at 18M and exit at 12M or 7M into the sunlight and beautiful pink anemones.
Sail Rock is basically a wall dive covered with tons of soft coral and anemones. There are huge schools of marine life here including trevally, barracuda, great barracuda, king mackerels, tuna, fusileers, giant groupers, giant moray eels, batfish, angelfish, butterfly fish, scorpion fish, and always a chance for the visiting whale shark.
For the advanced diver there are a series of submerged pinnacles off the main rock that are exciting to explore.
Widely considered one of Thailand's premier dive site, Chumphon Pinnacle is also one of the islands most challenging, with occasionally strong currents. Ranging from depths of 14m to 36m, the site is a group of massive rocks arranged in a rough oval and running north to south.
Visibility is superb in season, and the site plays host to a wide variety of pelagic as well as reef fish. Great barracuda, king mackerel, grouper, and tuna throng to Chumphon year round. Also see huge schools of batfish, trevally, fusileers. This site is also great for seeing some of the smaller stuff such as banded shrimp, boxfish, and white eyed moray eels. As you go shallower there are huge fields of anemones which will blow your mind. Whale shark sightings are common here as well as keep you eyes open in the shallow water for the occasional groups of beluga whales.
As the site is a fair distance offshore, visitors from the open ocean are unpredictable and sailfish, oceanic white tip sharks and bull sharks have been spotted.
Mango Bay is a beautiful protected bay on the north side of Koh Tao which is perfect for beginning divers and experienced divers looking for a nice relaxing dive. There are beautiful rock formations and stunning hard corals in which can be seen large schools of fusiliers, barracuda, groupers, triggerfish, angelfish and butterfly fish. Also in you look close in the sand you can see seahorses and gobies.
Twins or Twin Peaks is one of the most popular sites on Koh Tao due to its diversity and that it's able to be enjoyed by beginning divers as well as experienced ones. There are two sets of pinnacles with the first set a maximum of 10 meters and the deeper set a maximum of 18 meters. There are many divers fish that make their home here including blue spotted sting rays, moray eels, pufferfish, angelfish, groupers, wrasse, the ornery triggerfish and cute gobies in the sand. Also the famous clown fish circle is here where a family of nemos make their home inside a circle of rocks, a must see on this dive. Twins is also home to buoyancy world, which is a group of man made sculptures that is great for putting to the test your buoyancy skills.
White Rock is a very diverse site made up of two big granite boulders with a bunch of smaller ones surrounding them. The maximum depth here is about 25M, but with the layout of the rocks you can have great dives at the shallower depths so this site is great for both open water and advanced divers. Here you can see stingrays, moray eels, yellowtail barracuda, turtles, butterfly fish, angelfish and some triggers to keep you alert.
Green rock consists of a bunch of boulder formations that create an impressive collection of swimthroughs which is great to practice your buoyancy skills. It is a very diverse site with beautiful diving from 8M to 28M. Here you can see eels, batfish, groupers, angelfish, pipefish and turtles. Also keep your eyes open in the sand a round the rocks for titan and yellow margin triggerfish which many whom make their home and nests here.
Appropriately named for its resemblance to a sharks dorsal fin, this is one of Koh Tao's treasures. Each side of the island is its own dive site, with one side packed with a huge variety of hard corals and sponges, making this a popular home for turtles. The other side boasts a breathtaking soft coral garden with frequent sightings of stingrays, moray eels and titan triggerfish. Currents at this site can be stronger than usual for this area which makes this the perfect opportunity for a drift dive.
Southwest Pinnacle is a pinnacle submerged beneath the surface lying about 15 minutes from Koh Tao island. The pinnacle ranges from 5m to 30m over a range of pinnacles and incredible marine life can be found there different to other sites in Koh Tao. Big schools of yellow tail snapper, barracuda, fusiliers, giant groupers, blue spotted stingrays and moray eels can also be found there. Lionfish, sea pens, and even the occasional Whale Shark have been spotted there also. Not a site to be missed.
