The two beginning certifications with Padi are Open Water Diver and Scuba Diver. There are a few differences between the certifications, which will be broken down below to get a better understanding of which certification is right for you.

Scuba Diver- 2 Day Course- 12m MAX with a Padi Professional.

Mandatory pre-requisites for the Scuba Diver Course are as follows….

Medical:- You must complete the Padi medical form and ensure all questions can be answered with a NO. If there are any YES answers, you must receive a medical clearance from your Dr to enable you to start your training.

Swim Tests:- 10 minute survival float- You must prove you can float in the water for 10 minutes without your head going underwater or touching anything for support.

Theory:- Chapters 1-3 of the Open Water Diver Theory.

Confined Water Pool Session:- Complete dives 1-3 in the swimming pool with your dedicated Padi Instructor.

2 Open Water Dives:- Complete 2 Open Water Dives from the shore or boat (minimum 5m depth). Done over the period of 1 day on the boat)

The Scuba Diver certification is the first license available on the Padi ladder. This course will take 2 days (not including the theory) and gives the successful a license to dive to 12m MAX with a Padi professional after completion. This course is perfect for anyone who has never really dived before or perhaps needing a little more confidence in and under the water before upgrading to the full Open Water Diver license. This certification also works very well for people who do not have enough time left on their holiday to complete the Open Water Course.

Open Water Diver- 3 Day Course- 18m MAX with a dive buddy.

Mandatory pre-requisites for the Open Water Diver Course are as follows….

Medical:- You must complete the Padi medical form and ensure all questions can be answered with a NO. If there are any YES answers, you must receive a medical clearance from your Dr to enable you to start your training.

Swim Tests:- 200m swim without swimming aids OR 300m swim with swimming aids/             10 minute survival float (You must prove you can float in the water for 10 minutes without your head going underwater or touching anything for support.)

Confined Water Pool Session:- Complete dives 1-5 in the swimming pool with your dedicated Padi Instructor.

4 Open Water Dives:- Complete 4 Open Water Dives from the shore or boat (minimum depth 5m.) Done over the period of 2 days on the boat.

The Open Water Diver Course is the first padi certification to allow you, after successful completion of your course to dive without a Padi professional but must be with a dive buddy (another Open Water Diver or higher certification.) This course lasts for 3 days (not including the theory) and allows you to a MAXIMUM depth of 18m after completion. This course is perfect for anyone and everyone, from people who have never dived before, to people who have tried a few times and now looking to go that step further. This license allows you more freedom to dive anywhere in the world and open up a whole new Discovery of adventures wherever you go.

Now you have heard us mention the dreaded word…. THEORY. Keep Calm and Think of the Fish!! Dive theory has never been so easy to complete. You can get in touch with any Dive center where you are going on holiday and they can send you the Padi E-Learning. This can be done from the comfort of your own home by your smartphone or Tablet or even Laptop. This frees up your holiday time, which we know is very precious. This also means you have already read about all the skills you are going to learn, and all the dive knowledge you need to know about. We are not having fun underwater if we are not being safe, and Knowledge is Power. The more you know the better you feel getting into the water.

But not to fear, if you are already on holiday and making the spontaneous decision to get your license, no problem! This can still all be done from your Smartphone/Tablet or Laptop but this time from the comfort of the beach under the shade of a palm tree… Wonderbubble!!

The Quick review mentioned for the Open Water Diver course will be administered by your Padi Instructor after completion of all your online Dive Theory (Chapters 1-5 and Final Exam) For Padi Scuba Diver certifications the Quick Review is N/A.

If you are still not sure what certification seems best for you, the best way to find out is to get in contact with us at Discovery Divers or a dive school where you are going on holiday. From there they can explain the courses and talk to you to get to know you as a person and your own comfort level. The underwater world is waiting for you and just a few days away…. And both certifications give you a license for life!

If not diving for years at a time we highly recommend the Padi Re-Activate course to refresh your diving skills and knowledge -no theory just swimming pool!

We look forward to seeing you underwater blowing bubbles with us soon!!
